Hutterite Pilgrimage: Sibiu (Hermannstadt)
Hutterite Pilgrimage: Sibiu (Hermannstadt)
Sibiu/Hermannstadt served as a regional capital and it was here where the government and also church officials made decisions about the Hutterites' regulations and eventual fate. It was also the location where many Hutterites were imprisoned for lengthy periods of time. We visited the courtyard connecting to the prison where many Hutterites were imprisoned, such as Johannes Stahl and his wife Judith. Jason reads from the record of David Hofer's 1937 visit to this very place. Nearbye is the wool factory and another prison where the (notorious) Mathies Hofer and the two Strauss sisters were imprisoned for over 15 years. From the Chronicle: But the three single sisters remained behind in Hermannstadt. They had been imprisoned right at the beginning, like Mathies Hofer, and had remained in the penitentiary for fifteen years. After their release, when they were free to go about in the town, they found themselves husbands, went over to the Lutheran church and married. Christina remained firm to the last moment. She prepared to travel with the others and her name was listed of the pass. When her suitor heard this, he came to her in tears began persuading her with a flood of honeyed words, and wouldn't stop until he had broken down her defenses. She had her name crossed off the pass, remained behind with her sister, and married as Elisabeth had done. Anna Egerter and Christina died soon afterwards. Christina left a daughter who came to the church community in Russia 17 years later
